I painted this mural in 2020–2021, toward the end of the pandemic. With the world in shutdown, I was lucky to have the chance to come in and paint every day.
The mural was created for Republic of Lucha, a 4,000 sq. ft. retail store, gallery, event space, outdoor cinema, and museum dedicated entirely to Lucha Libre. Founded by wrestling legends Penta Zero Miedo and Rey Fénix, the space brought together official merchandise, a mask gallery, art installations, and appearances by some of the biggest names in Lucha Libre — all under one roof in the heart of Los Angeles. They even hosted live wrestling events in the back.
Although the physical store has since closed, Republic of Lucha continues online as a hub for Lucha Libre culture — offering official merch, masks, and world-class events featuring top wrestlers. www.republicoflucha.com
The idea behind the mural was to create an audience — a vibrant crowd featuring familiar faces from the world of wrestling, local figures from South Pasadena, characters from wrestling-themed comic books, music or moves and everyday fans. Because, truly, everyone loves Lucha Libre.
